Some of the provisions in the Refugees Act remain deficient in providing clear guidelines for the status of asylum seekers.

This was said by a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Law at the University of Botswana Dr Elizabeth Macharia during an ongoing media practitioners training on Refugee Laws.

Dr Macharia said the act is also silent on assistance with procedure of registering asylum seekers.

For her part Deputy Regional Representative of the Southern Africa under the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Veronica Modey-Ebi said most governments do not want the UN to talk about refugee issues yet there are 67.7 million displaceable persons globally.
